Escape
2021 // Saxophone & Electronics
Escape
is a piece composed for tenor saxophone with an electronic accompaniment track, which explores themes of disorientation and mania.
Escape
is performed by Philipp Stäudlin on tenor saxophone.
Compositionally, I began with the electronics part, creating an eerie, cold environment, utilizing highly processed metallic samples and dark synth drones. I reached out to Philipp before I had even started writing the sax part, as I wanted to get some unconventional atonal saxophone samples that I could layer within the electronics to further create this unwelcoming environment.
I then wrote the saxophone part as if it was "dropped" into this hostile environment. I pictured the saxophone waking to find itself in a cold, dark room, then begins to slowly explore the space before encountering a threat and running from it. Momentarily escaping, the saxophone enters another period of exploration before being rediscovered and is forced to fight back in a moment of frenzy. The saxophone then finally escapes outside but is lost, unsure where to go or what to do next.

Black Space
2020 // Hyper Drumhead, NIME 2020
Black Space
was composed for the Hyper Drumhead, a novel audio/visual digital musical instrument designed a created by Victor Zappi that presents highly correlated sonic and visual elements.
The piece revolves around the manipulation of acoustic qualities of sound propagation and reverberation in a physical model, that is capable of both synthesizing and rendering sound waves. I gradually populate the black space that stretches across the surface of his instrument with sound sources, creating layered textures and percussive sounds that get trapped and resonate in different 2D shapes and materials. As the piece evolves, I explore the acoustic effects arising as he alters the physical properties of these materials and the shapes these sounds exist in.

Lost The Way
2020 // Spoken Word & Electronics
Lost The Way
is a composition that utilizes the ending speech of Charlie Chaplin from The Great Dictator (1940) as the focus instrument.
This work was largely influenced by, and is a comment on, the growing division within the state of American politics. Animosity between the right and the left has resulted in a country the is lost in fighting one another rather than for the same future. Vocal samples from Charlie Chaplin describing the dangers inciting hate and violence are spliced with samples from the 45th president, stressing that relevance of Chaplin's speech in today's climate.
Compositionally, Chaplin's vocal contours provided the central rhythmic and melodic drive of the piece.
First Rain
2020 // Electronics
First Rain
is a piece composed predominately with environmental samples, which explores the musicality of the living and natural sounds found in the Australian outback.
This piece utilizes looping samples of different native animals such as the laugh of the kookaburra and trill of the booroolong frog to create swelling textural layers. Intensity grows as the animals wait for the first rain to break the drought, which finally arrives and relieves the wildlife in a powerful thunderstorm.
This piece was again revisited in 2021 during my work with the ambisonic editor project, in which I deconstructed and spatialized each track. The user of the ambisonic tool was encourage to navigate through this outback environment, providing a much more immersive auditory experience.
Fragments
2020 // Flute and Electronics
Fragments
is an electro-ambient journey through continuously morphing soundscapes, with rhythmic elements surfacing aperiodically overtime.
Long sustained tones are layered above percussive samples in a constant state of tension. As the piece progresses, two flute parts are introduced and with them a sense of relief and stillness ensues, before dissolving back into the electronics as freely in which they came.
